What is the theme of this festival?

Dragon boating is based on a 2,300-year-old legend. In 278 B.C., Qu Yuan, a renowned Chinese poet and statesman, committed suicide by drowning himself in the Mei Lo River to protest against government corruption. Nearby fishermen quickly paddled their boats to the river and thrashed the water to scare fish away from eating his body. This act of thrashing the water became a dragon boat tradition in honor of Qu Yuan’s sacrifice.
